Cockatoos bowling centre, Paphos, Cyprus

16th - 24th June 2012

Now in its 8th year the Cockatoos Paphos Open is a popular event for bowlers looking for great competitive play as well as sunshine and that holiday feel. Past winners include Costas Kyriakou, George Stavrinou, Paul Moor and Stuart Williams was back this year to defend the title he won against Lee Cocker in 2011.

The final was played out by England's Stuart Williams and Russia's Konstantin Matvienko. The fourteen year old had impressed many during the week and that included Stu Williams who said "He has a cool head for such a young player". Well the final could have been over very quickly as Williams raced to a big lead hitting the first 10 strikes but ended with 278 as the youngster hit 220. But with 16 pins added to the overall score for the junior bonus that lead was not as big as it looked and Williams needed to be carefull in the second game. A 7-10 caused some concern for Williams but he rounded out the game with 247 to Konstantin's 193 and won his third Cockatoos title 525-429.

George Stavrinou shows great improvement
Early runners

After the first few squads of this years event it's Paphos born George Stavrinou a former winner of the event that lead with 1119 (223) after the five games qualifying. George who together with wife Nantia own and run quite a few businesses in Paphos was happy after taking the lead stating "The lane condition is good and I feel comfortable on the lanes at the moment".

Young Russian Konstantin Matvienko is one to watch
In second place was young Russian Konstantin Matvienko who lives on the island with his parents. Konstantin has been improving year on year and his 1112 (222) should easily see him into the later rounds. Third place early on was Christos Ioanou with 1069 (213) and highest placed female was Stavrinou's wife Nantia Herodotou in 6th place with 1039 (207).

Come Tuesday though we saw a new leader in the form of Finnish bowler Juho Makela who struggled in his first squad at 5pm but soon found a line in the 8pm squad rolling games of 211,202,232,268 and 226 for 1139 (227). Bowling in the same squad Cypriot Christos Krassas moved into fourth place overall with 1071 (214) this despite rolling a middle order block of 230, 128 and then 276. The high game of the event so far came in this squad also as Paphos bowler Nakis Perikleous rolled a 279 but failed to improve on an earlier squad score.

Fisherman Costas Kyriakou makes a catch
Big Costas the Shark killer

A busy day on Wednesday of three squads, In the first squad no players made any real move on the overall leaders but that all changed in the 5pm squad as Russian and father of young Konsantin Kyrill Matvienko rolled games of 200, 212, 297, 244 and 227 for 1180 to take the overall lead on a 236 average.

The lead was not held for long though as the 8pm squad produced a few fireworks.

Big Daddy Kyrill Matvienko almost perfect
Cypriot George Stavrinou smashed in games of 289, 227, 245, 216 and 216 for 1193 (238) but was beaten to first place overall by Navigators team mate Costas Kyriakou on 1197 (239) after games of 258, 227, 209, 236 and 267. Big Costas a fisherman from Limassol and the urban myth is he wrestles sharks on his boat, he is also a former winner of the event as well as Cypriot international and looked awesome, he is sure to be a challenger in the finals.

Elsewhere more Navigator players Andreas Christophorou and Greek international Yiannis Stathatos moved into 6th and 7th on 1112 and 1111 (222).

Charis more focussed today

Williams arrives in style

Shock horror it rained in Cyprus on Wednesday night but Thursday came and it was all clear again and nine players took the Cockatoos lanes for the first squad of the day at 2pm. Cypriot national player Charis Panayiotou had bowed a few previous squads and struggled to find the right line to make any impact on the leaders but on Thursday we saw a different more focussed Charis as he blasted a 268 in the first game but dropped-off the pace in the second game with 172. He dug deep though and added games of 202, 236 and 258 to round out with 1136 (227) and into the top five overall. Charis said on the squad " My head was not in it in the earlier squads, I had too much on my mind from business to family but I'm ready now"

Paul could have had Moor
The only other player to make any real move on the top ten was Nicos Theodorou who rolled a 280 in game two and made 1092 (218) to place 10th.

Next came the 5pm squad and a chance for English duo Ian Hollands and Paul Moor to make their mark in their first outing in the tournament. Both players hail from Hull in England and the latter of the two we all known from his escapades in Europe and for the European Weber cup team. Paul started reasonably well with 225 and stepped up a gear to post 234 and 227 but could have had a lot more if it were not for leaving quite a few seven and tenpins. He added 200 and 258 for a total of 1144 (228) and good enough for fourth place overall. Ian Hollands started slowly with 170 but soon found a rhythm to add 218, 211, 219 and 248 for 1066 (213) and 15th place.

Williams as predictable as ever
Come the final squad of the day it was expected that England's Stuart Williams and Darren Cundy would make a grab for the overall lead as they joined the tournament. Stu set off in his usual casual style with a 212 as Darren lead with 231, The other English player Lee Cocker who came second in 2011 just could not strike and ended the first game with 180.

Williams though found his groove and blasted games of 243,242,279 and 235 to end with 1211 (242) and as expected took the overall lead. Darren Cundy continued to shine after his bright start adding 221 and 268 but then came the transition and moving of lanes for the last two games and Darren struggled with games of 158 and 194 to end with 1072 (214) and back in 15th place overall. Lee Cocker did not fair any better ending in 28th overall with 990 (198).

There was some good play elsewhere though as Paphos born Eric Evripidou shot 1118 (222) and Yiannis Stathatos who shot over 1100 but did not improve on an earlier score of 1111.

Wonder Williams
Williams almost hits back to back perfectos

The day started with just four players in the 10am squad but we did see a player make a move on the leaders when Malta's Ray Falzon hit games of 185,224,257,236 and 237 for a total of 1139 and into 6th overall.

In the next squad England's Stuart Williams showed just how good he is and how difficult it would be to beat him by blasting an amazing set of games. He started with 259 then rolled 22 strikes in a row to add 300 and looked to be on for back to back perfectos but a single pin cost him and he shot 288. Stu added 202 and 214 on the transition pair to extend his lead at the top on 1263 (252).

Pavlos turns some heads
On to 4pm and a full squad with many new players took to the lanes and now chasing an extended score from Stu Williams. Former winner Paul Moor had another try out to improve on his 1144 fifth placing. Paul this time rolled games of 200,240,238,258 and 253 for 1189 (237) and moved up just one place to fourth. Elsewhere  Eric Evripidou improved his score to 1135 (227) for 10th place and Koyllis Konstantinou moved into 16th with 1100 (220).

The final squad of the day was another busy one with more new players but it was all about the surprise package of Pavlos Pelekanos from Cyprus who smashed in a 290 in the very first game before adding 226 and 277 but again we saw a player change lanes and not bowl as well in the final two game as Pavlos added just 163 and 199 for 1155 and fifth place overall.

Stathatos falters
Alex the great

As we hit the final day of qualifying players wer looking to break into the cut or improve on earlier positions. The first squad of Saturdy had just eight players due probably to the late night the Cypriots had the night before watching Greece against Germany. Just one player improved and that was Giorgos Zampetakis who rolled 1007 and jumped inside the cut in 37th.

The next squad saw nine of the twenty players improve. First Yiannis Stathatos a Greek international blasted games of 258 and 262 and looked odds on to improve and break into the top five but fell away in the next three games with 199,190 and 192 and did not beat an earlier score.  Another Greek player Alex Molfessis did a little better rolling 243,226,220,178 and 224 for 1091 (21) and into 18th overall. England's Lee Cocker improved also with 1056 (211) and moved into 27th.

cockatoos_paphos_open_2012_alex_molfessis.jpg
Alex rolls events second perfect game

Molfessis who I personally tipped to be dangerous then showed why in the 4pm squad.

The young Greek international looked awesome firing 258 then twelve perfect balls for the events second 300 game. He then kept the pace adding 233 and 251 and needed 223 to overtake England's Stuart Williams at the top of the tree. A few dodgy frames and he only managed 178 but enough to pass second placed Costas Kyriakou and ending with 1219 and joined Williams in the top two bracket that would make the final round five.

Elsewhere Alex Christofi bowled better with games of 206, 215, 214, 225 and 207 for 1067 and well inside the cut for the top 42 that would advance to the final round 1.

It started to get interesting in the last but one squad of qualifying  and we saw a big jump by Russian female Nadya Umnuakova who placed 6th with games of 238,245,215,177 and 267 for 1182 including 40 pins ladies bonus. Another performing well was Costas Christou in 8th with 1165 (230).

Just four players entered the last squad of qualifying and all four chasing a better position for the finals but it was only young Russian Konstantin Matvienko that made any real move as he re-broke into the final step 3 in 9th with games of 247,182,254,202,235 for 1160 (232) and in so pushed Cypriot Charis Panayiotou in the final step one to be bowled at 9am on the Sunday morning. The cut for 42 landed on Stelios Stylianou with 1006 (201).

Final Step 1

Exciting times in the final step 1 as players were in the cut then out of it. Going well and taking the lead was Cypriot star Andreas Christophoru with games of 226,248 and 203 (1789) (223). Second was Charis Panayiotou with 1785 and third was 17 year old paphos junior Menelaos Theologou on 1778 ties with Eric Evripidou. Inside the cut also included Darren Cundy, Yiannis Stathatos, Niki Shiza, Ian Hollands, Christos Krassas, Nakis Perikleous and the cut falling on Lee Cock from England with 1665. Out went Phillip Kargotis by just three pins as well as Alex Christofi and Stelios Stylianou.

Final Step 2

Exciting yet again in the final step 2 as players looking safe suddenly dropped out of the tournament. At the top Cypriot Andreas Christophorou looked fantastic on the burned lanes shooting 234,249 and 224 for 2496 to hold first place going into the match play rounds, Second was young Menelaos Theologou with 2464 thanks in part to a final game of 266. Third was Eric Evripidou with 2406 and making the top ten to advance were Charis Panayiotou, Cristos Krassas, Antreas Karystianos, Koullis Konstantinou, Nakis Perikleous, Yiannis Stathatos and Nestoras Nestoros who was on the cut line with 2313 (210). The big shock was England's Darren Cundy going out of the tournament after a nightmare 140 game on lanes one and two. Out also went Lee Cocker by just 9 pins despite a final game of 257 and out also Niki Shiza and Ian Hollands among others.

Final Step 3

How many times can you say exciting without it getting boring I wonder? Well if the last round was exciting Im uncertain the word for this round as lots of the matches went down to the very last ball. Nestoras Nestoros defeated Kyrill Matvienko 369-358 as Yiannis Stathatos took out Costas Christou 495-376. In a final ball clincher Russian Konstantin Matvienko sent home Nakis Perikleous 471-470 with Nakis needing a strike to tie and left a 10 pin. Pavlos Pelekanos defeated Koullis Konstantinou 432-423 and Antreas Karystianos beat Ray Falzon 440-421. Finnish player Juho Makela passed Christos Krassas 388-365 as Andreas Christophorou beat Navigators team mate Charis Panayiotou 497-452 and finally Menelaos Theologou beat Eric Evripidou 460-420.

Final Step 4

More titanic battles followed in the final step 4 as one seed was beaten and the other advanced. George Stavrinou fell to Yiannis Stathatos 407-491 but Paul Moor continued by beating Antreas Karystianos 447-412. Elsewhere Costas Kyriakou beat Nestoras Nestoros 418-392 and Russian female Nadya Umnuakova took out junior bowler Menelaos Theologou 421-406. Young Russian Konstanin Matvienko beat Andrea Christophorou 412-396 and finally Finland's Juho Makels defeated Pavlos Pelekanos 444-432

Final Step 5

England's Stuart Williams and Greek junior international Ale Molfessis joined the tournament again in the final step five and again one seed stayed and one went out. Staying was two time winner Stu Williams who defeated Greek international Yiannis Stathatos 458-446 and out went Alex Molfessis despite a tie with Finland's Juho Makela. Both players hit 425 so a one ball roll off was needed, Both players struck then hit nine pins but the Finn edged out the greek in the next frame and advanced. Living to fight another day was Paul Moor who beat Russian female Nadya Umnuakova 438-356 and although looking a 40 pin lead in the first game Costas Kyriakou was pinned back by Russian junior Konstantin Matvienko who three strike after strike to level the match then claim the win 439-427.

Final Steps 6 and 7

One tight match and one landslide started with top seed Stu Williams defeating Juho Makela easily with games of 234 and 241 to Juho's 158 and 170 and Williams winning 475-328. Paul Moor came up against a fearless junior in Konstantin Matvienko and went out of the event as Paul hit 219,217 and Matvienko  198 and a fine 277 for the 491-436 win.
